Collectable Card - "Mike Martin" by Jimmy Lane
The perfect card for any Florida east coast surfing enthusiast featuring an image of Mike Martin overlooking Ponce de Leon Inlet at the South Jetty in New Smyrna Beach.
This collectable card measurers 5" x 7" and is printed on linen type paper. Each card comes wrapped in cellophane and includes an envelope.
Mike Martin June 5, 1949 ~ October 22, 2016 Born in Evansville, Indiana to James and Louise Hanner Martin, Mike came to Florida in 1965, when he began surfing, and judged his first contest in 1972. He graduated from Florida Atlantic University with his Bachelors in fine arts and shortly after, founded the Smyrna Surfari Club with thirteen others. Breaking through the international borders of professional surfing, Mike traveled to Australia to judge his first IPS (International Professional Surfing) event, in 1982. As a front-runner in the founding of ASP (Association of Professional Surfing), he then went on to be named the first head judge for their organization. In 1997, Martin competed in the amateur circuit and won the WSA (Western Surfing Association) grand masters championship. In 2000, he initiated drive for the surfing monument that stands at the Flagler Avenue approach and later dedicated that monument to commemorate the importance of surfing, to our local community. Mike was invited, in 2001, to serve as head judge to the APSPR (Association of Professional Surfers Puerto Rico), which he upheld until his dying day. At the New Smyrna Beach Museum of History, you will find a display of surfing history in NSB, “If Everybody Had an Ocean”, that was organized by Martin. He was inducted into the East Coast Hall of Fame in 2014 and then went on to pioneer the dedication of the oceanfront Marianne Clancy Park, just north of Flagler Avenue. Aside from surfing, his passions were in academia, music, and American patriotism.
