"Gabordy Canal" By Elisabeth "Sissie" Barr. Each card comes with a matching envelope and is wrapped in cellophane and measures approx. 5.5" X 8". Located just East of Riverside Drive at the border of New Smyrna Beach and Edgewater, the Gabordy Canal was constructed between 1768 - 1777 by settlers who joined the Turnbull Settlement "Smyrnea" as indentured servants. The Gabordy Canal was believed to be an existing creek that drained to the river that was expanded by hand to create drainage control, transportation routes and dry land to support the settlement which was planned to be an agricultural enterprise. The Gabordy Canal is the southernmost canal in the Turnbull Canal System as registered with the National Park Services registry of historic places.
