"The Everglades River of Grass" by Marjory Stoneman Douglas. Born in Minneapolis in 1890 Ms. Douglas followed her father to Florida in 1915 where she became Society Editor for Frank B. Stoneman's Miami Herald. The Growing threat of destruction of the River of Grass, the result of over drainage, captured Ms. Douglas' attention, in support of Ernest Coe a landscape architect, Harold Bailey a Coral Gables Ornithologist and the Herald. They joined other local activists in the promotion of establishment of a national park in the Everglades. Five year's in the writing, Everglades; River of Grass was published in 1947 in celebration of the dedication of the park by president Harry Truman. Marjory Stoneman Douglas died in 1998 at the age of 108.

The mission of the Southeast Volusia Historical Society is to collect, archive, display, and make available to the public artifacts related to the Southeast Volusia County area. Through the New Smyrna Museum of History we promote interest in, and knowledge of, local history and culture.
