"The Barefoot Mailman" By Theodore Pratt. This 50 anniversary edition of the much celebrated title chronicles the mostly forgotten barefoot mailmen who carried the mail on foot from Miami to Palm Beach prior to the railroad coming to South Florida in the 1890s. The route taken was roughly 100 miles of roadless coast of southeast Florida and took 3 days in each direction. The men found it easier to walk barefoot in the soft sand using a special technique for being an accomplished "walkist" the each travelled roughly 7000 mile annually.
